So apologies if this sounds a lot like the drumbeat from Green Bay but it’s pretty clear to nearly everyone but the ultimate decision makers that Jurgen Klinsmann’s time as Manager of the USMNT has run its course. A disastrous 0-2 start to the final Hex round of WCQ complete with poor tactical and personnel choices means now is the time for a reboot.
So Fox Sports has a list of 10 potential coaches and it’s a lot of Nope for me. Timbers manager Caleb Porter did make the cut but I don’t see anything in the Timbers aside from a hot finish to 2015 and a title that makes me think Porter would provide the requisite stability or technical prowess.
As I tried to argue previously, I want the USMNT to move on from JK and to do so with a style similar to what the Chilean national team plays and Atletico Madrid. High press, physical, quick counters. It’s still really hard to NOT qualify for the WC from our region, so I’m sure most Managers (even what’s left of JK) could punch our ticket. But long-term I care less about the resume or affiliation with MLS or USSF and more about style. Poach a Diego Simeone acolyte and I’m good.
