Burnley @ Tottenham

Burnley not exactly road warriors but you can never underestimate the Spurs capacity to Spurs.  Tottenham looking for it’s first back-to-back wins in the EPL since October.

1st Half

Spurs almost with the dream start in the first 90 seconds as a lasered pass from Rose to Kane opens up the Burnley defense.  Kane finds Dele on the left but the youngster with a poor effort trying to bend one into the top corner and skies it over.  Burnley had the best chance early with a careless give away by Walker leads to a Burnley cross fizzed across the face of goal and only a reaction kick save by Lloris kept things level.  The visitors did take advantage off a 2nd Walker error as the ball caroms around the Tottenham penalty area before being tucked home by Barnes for Burnley in the 21′.  But just 6′ later Walker makes amends with a stinging cross driven low into the area and Dele stabs it home.  Tottenham has been directing the action for the most part but Burnley has gotten in the way deflecting several cracks at goal.   Kane has had a couple looks but a fine save turned him away in the 41′.  Rose and Walker getting fwd have been causing problems for Burnley.  Burnley content to see and absorb pressure smartly recognizing that getting fwd with too many numbers just opens them up to the Tottenham counter.  Tottenham ends the half with a corner.  So far Spurs have played it’s corners long towards back corner of the penalty area and its accomplished little.

2nd Half

In the 50′ Eriksen with a wicked dipping strike from 25-yards or so that just clips the top of the net as Burnley exhales.   About 4′ later Rose sends in a cross and Eriksen as a free header from about 8-yards out but the Dane can only steer it directly to the GK.  Burnely puts a header across goal that  Lloris can handle but Tottenham fortunate nobody was streaking towards goal to get on the end of it.  A minute later Dele curls one just beyond the far post.  Few minutes after that Eriksen dribbles around the edge of the area and unleashes a low curling effort that a strong hand keeps out.  Close again for Spurs.  Tottenham nibbling around the area but no clear ideas about how to breakthrough.  The strategy is to fire lottery tickets at the Burnley goal and hope to win the raffle or catch a lucky deflection.

Tottenham turns it around in the 70′ on a lovely counter.  Kane starts the break and Sissoko carries fwd feeding Rose on his left and Rose lashes it home from a steep angle to the near post off his favored left foot.  Poor decision making from Lloris almost gives away the advantage in the 74′ as he comes for a free kick and doesn’t get there.  The looping header falls on the wrong side of the crossbar for Burnley as Lloris was scrambling back.  In the 75′ Son wastes a great chance to put this one away.  Another great ball from Sissoko finds the South Korean in space on the left.  He selfishly tries a strike form distance instead of passing to Harry Winks in space steaming down the Burnley penalty area.  Despite that, Son consistently provides a shot of energy and inventiveness off the bench.  Spurs survive a nervous stretch of possession from Burnley, but the visitors can do little with all the possession around the Tottenham area.  Spurs off some counters and high press choke out the Burnley attack and are able to see out the win and get a needed 3 points.
